Couldn't disagree more. You blame passing ability as a team yet don't single out the players who have the ball the most.

Dare we say the Stoke model ? They have evolved their system under Hughes to play more of a pass and move game while retaining good organisation and physical strengths they were previously renowned for.

Agree it does look that way but it does also help midfielders with options when strikers run the channels. I have not seen that on a regular basis for a long, long while. Sakho and Valencia started to provide a lot of movement early on last season and it definitely helped Downing, Song and even Noble. So its not just down to midfielders IMHO. :-)

Good post.

I think the pressure on Bilic might be just to produce another pragmatic team ethos that can eke out some results through sheer application, rather than actually building something that aspires to try and match the better teams in terms of passing and creativity.

Within a year we need to be saying a knighthood f or Slaven

Re: What Bilic shoudl have learnt by now ...
Nothing to do with what pace or movement a striker has in his locker when Noble and Kouyate take an age to move the ball.

It only goes out to the wings, never in the final third around the box.

The sooner we get some proper midfielders who can play quick passes forwards, the better.

Re: What Bilic shoudl have learnt by now ...
Basic technique should not disappear even under the BFS systems but our players do not seem to be able to pass and move at speed and play a one or two touch game. Its true that if we have not worked on the little one twos just outside the box it will take a while to build it into our play. But we are right to question if some of the players have the first touch and instant control needed and more importantly the quick thinking and movement to create space etc.

At the back I would place question marks against Collins of course but also Reid and even Jenkinson in that respect. Tomkins and Cresswell are arguably the best in terms of control and passing.

In midfield? Noble is slow for sure but does possess decent control and passing technique so may be able to cope. Song is the best on the ball of those I know about especially now Downing has gone. Payet looks and sounds like a player with great technique and is quick. Lanzini, Obiang ? Dont know yet.

Kouyate? Not the greatest passer of the ball and may struggle in a system based on one and two touch football. But you do also need some box to box workers.

The rest of midfield? Nolan, Jarvis, Amalfitano? Jarvis has the speed but not sure about Amalfitano. Nolan is not going to be of any use now.

Up front we simply need another player with pace and movement.

In summary, our budgets for players start to show when looking for those with great technique and passing. We are far inferior to the top 4 in this respect and no surprise. We will do well to match Arsenal in that first game :-(

Exactly the reason why Kouyate and Noble need to be replaced.

Slow, dwelling, wayward passing.

Painful to watch.

I watched Arsenal Lyon on BT sport yesterday, they looked very sharp scoring 6 good goals...

Slaven is going to have his work cut out to find his best side in time to give them a game

I firmly believe those basic skills simply haven't been focussed on for the past 4 years. So some players are up to 4 years behind where they might be in that respect.

Horrible piece of American commentary.......De Gea caught the ball, then threw it towards Depay near the half way line.....

"Look at that toss".

Oooer Missus.

I'm watching Barca against MU live here in the US. The speed at which MU and Barca are moving the ball out from the back is bewildering compared to our pedestrian pile of shit against the divey, snidey, cheaty Malteser cunts.

The passing is more incisive, the ball control better too. Do we lack confidence in our basic skills?

One thing that Bilic should have learned is not to look at WHO, which goes into meltdown (MELTDOWN) if we don't beat Charlton Athletic in a pre-season friendly.

Re: What Bilic shoudl have learnt by now ...
The starting 11 could be that, but it could also reasonably be this...

Adrian
O'Brien, Tomkins, Reid, Cresswell
Noble, Kouyate
Valencia, Payet, Jarvis
Sakho.

Which would effectively be one change from last season's team. I share the positivity about the new players coming in - seems like a promising bunch. But I doubt that all of them will walk into the first team, and if they do there'd be a lot of uncertainty about how they function immediately with each other.

It's pretty reasonable to be concerned about things right now, given the performances we've seen so far. The good thing about that is that it might make the owners that much more willing to sign a few more players yet.

Re: What Bilic shoudl have learnt by now ...
Agree Crassus.

Our starting XI on the first day could well be:

-----------------------Adrian

O'Brien Reid Ogbonna Cresswell

-------------Obiang---------Kouyate

Valencia-----------Payet------------Lanzini

----------------------Sakho

Subs:

Randolph, Tomkins, Hendrie, Noble, New Winger, Zarate, New Striker

And that's only with O'Brien as Jenkinson can't play against Arsenal, and in all liklihood Song and Carroll to be available to the side by about October.

Certainly not even close to the side that was so poor in very hot conditions the other night, and with plenty about it to be worth getting excited about.

I am struggling with all the negativity, really am

Four real games in the wafer and some appear to see us as doomed and the transfer activity poor

We were required to file a squad the day before the window opened so it is fairly obvious that the weaknesses in last seasons squad would be apparent.

That said one way or another we are in the next round, have made some very good and indeed some interesting signings with the window not yet half way through and a stated intent to brng in more

This has the makings of the best ever window and a squad that has continually improved moving up another notch

I am looking forward to the season and seeing the new side
